About
Just who is Mika Matsumoto?
I’ve been writing mostly short stories since the mid-1990s, the subject matter always seeming to revolve around romance. Truth be told, I’m a sucker for a great romance story. As a New York City native, I encounter many different cultures on a daily basis and it often becomes fodder for a story. Equally interesting, when I visit Japan — my absolutely favorite place to be — is where my stories bloom. It’s not always about writing a story though. Often, I’m commenting on the relationship between men and women, and sometimes experimenting myself on how those interactions can be improved. It’s all work in progress, but I like to enjoy the adventure as much as possible.
Why romance? Why not sci-fi or regular fiction?
Look at it this way: anyone can write a plain fiction story; the subject matter to choose from is vast. Sci-fi, while fun to read, just isn’t my thing. Romance really tickles at the heartstrings and forces the writer to empathize, put themselves into the shoes of their character… to essentially make them real. Romance is the heart of emotion itself. It is a reflection of the writer’s character and to some extent, their soul. It gives my readers a glimpse into who I am as a person and how powerful romance and desire really can be.
Can I suggest a type of short story you can write?
I actually do take requests of this sort, but I can’t guarantee I’ll go along with it! ;-) If you have an idea for a story you don’t see on this site, you can let me know by going to my contact page and sending me a message. You can always send me your suggestion on Twitter as well.
Who are some of your favorite authors?
Here’s an easy one! I write romance, so no doubt I read a lot of it as well. I’m a huge Virginia Henley fan, as well as Christine Feehan, Jacqueline Frank, Sandra Hill… among others. Romance is a billion-dollar industry and there is a lot of talent out there!
